Mentoring - Skills & Attributes

Providing emotional, practical and spiritual (where relevant) through-the-gate support to individuals leaving prison and returning to Warwickshire, Coventry and Solihull.

In this role you will be responsible for:

  • Attending all compulsory training events (approx. quarterly)

  • Identifying targets for clients to work to

  • Supporting clients to achieve identified targets

  • Arranging and attending regular mentoring meetings with clients in the community

  • Attending appointments with client (where relevant)

  • Accompanying clients in the community to access support

  • Encouraging and motivating clients

  • Building client’s self confidence

  • Completing feedback forms within 24 hours of meeting

  • Undertaking other duties as agreed with the Community Chaplain for the effective delivery of mentoring.

Skills and Qualities Required for This Role:

  • Ideally available for at least 2 hours per week when client is in the community

  • Must be able to commit for a minimum of 6-9 months

  • Excellent communication skills

  • Trustworthy and reliable

  • Committed

  • Non-judgemental

  • Enthusiastic and optimistic

  • Caring & approachable

  • Realistic

  • Willing to work under guidance of volunteer co-ordinator

  • But, no previous experience of working with offenders necessary.
